Intel launched a new group of products called Intel In-Vehicle Solutions that will slash the development time for infotainment by a year for new car makers.

Intel’s new products, including in-car modules and software (middleware and operating system stacks and development kits) will also reduce costs for infotainment by 50 percent for car makers, Intel announced Thursday.

Eventually Intel plans to provide technology for self-driving cars.

“Our goal is to fuel the evolution from convenience features available in the car today to enhanced safety features of tomorrow and eventually self-driving capabilities,” said Doug David Intel Corp. VP, Internet of Things.

The first OEM modules and software will be for infotainment.

Intel is also conducting a research project for the connected car.  It is looking at securing it from hackers.

Additionally, “Ethnographers, anthropologists and engineers at Intel are working on a variety of research projects aimed at making roads safer and gaining knowledge about the safest and most intuitive way for drivers to interact with their vehicles. Advanced sensing, computation, and interconnected data will revolutionize the way people travel and connect with each other.”
