Google announced plans Tuesday to formally extend Android to smart watches and wearables.

It launched Google Wear to help software makers create apps for smart watches allowing the devices to control music, reply to text messages or open a garage door, as examples.

Google said in a blog, “…we’ve barely scratched the surface of what’s possible with mobile technology. That’s why we’re so excited about wearables—“

Android Wear watches will let you say “OK Google” and then “ask questions, like how many calories are in an avocado, what time your flight leaves, and the score of the game. Or say ‘Ok Google’ to get stuff done, like calling a taxi, sending a text, making a restaurant reservation or setting an alarm,” said the blog.

You can also use watches to control other devices, so you might say “ ‘Ok Google’ to fire up a music playlist on your phone, or cast your favorite movie to your TV,” Google said.

Also Tuesday, LG Electronics said it will introduce its first Android smart watch called the G Watch, due in Q2.

And Motorola said it will ship a Moto 360 Android watch this summer with an elegant round watch face shown above.  More details on the Moto watch are expected to be revealed today at a press conference.

Fossil also said it working with Google on creating Android devices.
