Updated: VAIS Technology is offering a new HDMI iPhone/iPod interface module for Toyota and Lexus cars that is unusual in that it uses it own colorful graphic interface and can add new features to the radio including weather forecasts and Apple map views.
VAIS also announced that next year, it will begin to offer interfaces, for cars beyond Toyota and Lexus, the two sole car makes it has addressed for the last 9 years.
It’s new iPhone interface module connects to the navigation/radio in a plug and play fashion to add iPhone control from the radio. Your phone is then recognized by the factory radio as an extra CD player or MP3 player so you don’t lose factory functions.
You get VAIS’s own user interface with app icons for a customized music player, 5-day weather forecast, and Apple maps that move as you drive. The system also pulls in your phone contacts and calendar appointments from the phone to the car radio. Full turn by turn spoken directions will come later.
Apps and music are controlled by the factory touch screen and music can be controlled by the factory steering wheel controls.
It works with iPhone 5 series phones and will play video from the phone on the radio screen.
VAIS says this level of HDMI/app/video integration in the factory radio is a first of its kind.
The VAIS modules, called the iVIC-5i and iVIC 6i, also show album art.
They work with 5th and 6th generation Toyota and Lexus navigation radios.
Retail pricing is about $400.
