Reviews are out today on the new iPhone 5S that hits stores on Friday.  A leading reviewer, Walt Mossberg of The Wall Street Journal called the phone “a delight” and “the best smartphone on the market.”

Reviewers said the  fingerprint scanner on the new iPhone 5S works flawlessly, allowing you to wake up the phone without inputting a password. And both The WSJ and The New York Times agreed that the phone’s camera, with its new dual flash system, shoots better pictures than the iPhone 5.

Mossberg said Bluetooth voice calls worked well even in the car.

Both liked iOS 7, although one said it took a bit of getting used to.

Mossberg noted of the fingerprint scanner,  “In my scores of tests, with three fingers, the reader never failed me and none of the 20 or so people I asked to test it was able to unlock the phone.”

David Pogue of The New York Times said of the scanner, “The best part is that it actually works — every single time, in my tests.”

Pogue also said, “Flash photos look much, much better. No longer will your loved ones’ skin look either nuclear white or “Avatar” blue.”

Bloomberg reviewer Rich Jaroslovsky agreed with much of the above but still said there’s not much to get excited about on the 5S.  He gives the iPhone 5S and new 5C credit for being  “solid,” but says, “there’s not much that’s pulse-quickening about them either.”

Pogue concludes, “The iPhone is no longer the only smartphone that will keep you delighted for the length of your two-year contract — but it’s still among the few that will.”
