If you skipped the factory navigation package on your new car, you can still view Google Maps directly on the radio screen with a new series of kits from CRUX.
And you can input new addresses as you drive (something the factory radio wouldn’t let you do).
CRUX last month entered the “video unlock” kit market, providing kits that permit a factory screen to display video when the car is in motion. We’re assuming you will not watch a DVD while driving, but there are other uses. If you run a navigation app on your iPhone or Android phone, it can connect to the factory radio by a Crux cable and you can see your navigation map on the screen.
Also, the screen can be hooked up to a camera that can be viewed even while the car is in motion.
CRUX has nine vehicle-specific models of the video unlock kit that each use a plug and play T-harness so there’s no wire cutting to install them. They work with vehicles from BMW, Audi, Volkswagen, Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, Land Rover, Jaguar, Porche and Ferrari. Suggested retail prices range from about $249 to $349. The kits are under Crux’s Video-in-Motion Sightline brand and will be formally introduced at the KnowledgeFest car audio trade show near Dallas, this month.
