Chicago

Last weekend I took a road trip to Chicago and was struck by the role of car audio in an exclusive part of the city.

As we walked around The Magnificent Mile on Saturday night, the sidewalks were flooded with shoppers and people out for a stroll.  Cars came by with the windows rolled down and their music turned up.  Bass, lots of it poured out of a car, then another and another, till I thought, “Hey, I haven’t seen that in a while.”

Many of these were high end cars, but also beat up Hondas; and motorcycles– Harleys, with loud radios.

One older guy on an orange Harley was blasting Steppenwolf’s “Born to be Wild.”  He stopped for a red light right by us and everyone on the sidewalk starting singing along. I mean yelling along.

I loved Chicago.  Music was everywhere. Kids hawking their hip hop CDs on the corners.  A free open air blues fest at Grant Park. And car audio was right in the middle of it.

  1. Nice to “hear” that car audio is alive and well at least in Chicago. Here in Phoenix I have actually noted that it is now rare to hear a car bumping down the road. I hope your observation is more dominant than mine!
