Hollywood Sound Labs, a brand known for rock solid subwoofers in the 90’s, is returning to the U.S. market this summer.

While Hollywood has remained active in Europe, the brand disappeared from the U.S. around 2008 after the company underwent a takeover attempt and became tied up in litigation,  according to owner Chris Ueng.

“Some of my clients have been asking when I can bring back the product,” said Ueng, adding that speaker quality at certain price levels has been declining in the U.S. and retailers are looking for “stable quality.”

“We have a good reputation.  We had very very low returns.  Less than 0.5 percent returns.  In some territories, they didn’t even have returns,” said Ueng.

Hollywood Sound Labs will launch initially a line of entry level subwoofers, coaxial speakers and amplifiers and then move up to the high end.

Subwoofers will range in price from $70 to $99 and coaxials, from $39 per pair up to $59.  Hollywood will release digital mono amplifiers rated at 600 x1 watts and 1000 x 1 watts at prices to be announced.

Products including amplifiers are produced in company-owned factories in Taiwan. Hollywood is also looking into U.S. production of some products.

Ueng points out that amplifiers “are specially designed to match our woofers.  That’s very important,” he said noting that the amps won’t overpower the subwoofers and there is less distortion in the system.

Shipping is expected in July or August.
