3M released its first window film that not only offers privacy and UV protection but also prevents thieves from easily entering a car even if they break the window.

The new film is thicker than typical window tinting and yet it is still easily shrink-applied to a car window, said 3M.

“This passes the test from our labs to be able to be called security film.  The other films have some of those properties, but this film was specifically designed to hold glass together during impacts,” said 3M Marketing Supervisor Karen Martin.

A thief typically requires only a few seconds to break into a car, but the window film holds the window glass in place long enough to hinder or deter the process, especially in “smash and grab” thefts.

Like other 3M window tinting, the new Scotchshield Automotive Security Film screens out almost half the solar energy coming through window. It also blocks 99 percent of UV light and provides effective SPF (Sun Protection Factor) of up to 1,000.

The 4 mil film is non-metal so it won’t interfere with Bluetooth, GPS or satellite radio.
