The IQ School is an intense product and technique training course for Installation Technicians who want to further their expertise in the Mobile Electronics field. It’s hosted each year by B&B Electronics of Edmonton, Canada and its held during the B&B Dealer Expo.
The course costs just under $1,000 to attend and gives students 3 days of in-depth, hands-on experience with vehicle evaluation and planning, component selection, custom fabrication, system tuning principles as well as product sales and new technology training.
B&B Electronics Ltd. partnered with Bryan Schmitt of Mobile Solutions in 2012 to manage the B&B Installer IQ School, and he led the charge again at the 2013 Event.
This year’s 72-hour build-off featured Ford, Chevy, and Dodge pickups as the vehicles, and there was an assortment of new and exciting products from manufacturers like Focal, Mosconi, Illusion, Advent, Metra, Clarion, Wirez, and many others. Each of the three 8-person teams each had a training and installation schedule they had to maintain, with product training and actual build time alternating during the course of the event, mimicking the typical shop experience of having to change focus multiple times during the day while completing projects on time and at a high level. Custom panels and subwoofer enclosures were crafted in a heated portion of the hotel garage, and the finishing work for them took place in one of the main ball rooms where the vehicles were disassembled, and then reimagined from the ground-up.
Schmitt was joined by several other Mobile Electronics industry experts, including Nick Wingate, who demonstrated new Mosconi product and went into detail on system tuning in the vehicles. “I feel that this really represents a great training platform that that combines great education with realistic examples of system planning and workflow.” said Schmitt. “The students take home a huge amount of knowledge, and go back to their shop with a better sense of the big picture of system building and project management.”
