A Hackathon is a “gathering of programmers to collaboratively code in an extreme manner over a short period of time,” according to Techopedia.

For Pioneer, the hope is to draw in some of the accessory makers at SEMA and encourage them to apply their accessories—say  for reading tire pressure– to the AppRadio.

Pioneer Director of Marketing for Car Electronics, Ted Cardenas explains, “There are companies at SEMA that do add-on modules—some that interface with OBD2 ports or a CAN bus or others.  Many of these manufacturers have a closed end to end solution that reads sensors and use an add-on display.  Many of those companies have considered doing the display through a phone app.  Our goal is to introduce those companies to software developers and engineers with the intention of creating more unique and auto-relevant apps that will be compatible with the AppRadio.”

Dates and location of the Hackathon will be announced this week.
