Kenwood Issues Update on iPhone Compatibility

share on:

After testing the iPhone 5 and iOS 6 for over a week, Kenwood, like some other car radio makers, said it found issues with its car head units and is offering some temporary solutions

KenwoodKenwood said the Apple iOS 6 update for the iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S has created compatibility issues due to changes to Bluetooth protocol used by Apple. The change has caused streaming audio problems over Bluetooth when used with some Kenwood receivers.

These  iOS 6 problems with Bluetooth streaming are:

  •  Intermittent auto connect, and random disconnects
  • Loss of streaming audio connection on some models
  • Loss of play/pause control and music ID information on some models

For now, Kenwood recommends using a wired connection to the phone.  It also  recommends that iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S owners refrain from updating their operating system to iOS 6 until a Kenwood software update is made available.

Testing with the iPhone 5, which no longer provides analog audio or video output through the multi-pin connector, does not affect operation with Kenwood CD-receivers as they have always supported the digital audio output from the iPhone or iPod.   Because Kenwood A/V receivers do not support digital audio and video input, we are currently unable to test this feature until Apple delivers the new Lightning-to-30 pin connector in October.
