For the first time, the iPhone 4S has been surpassed as the single best- selling phone in the U.S.

Samsung Galaxy S3Samsung’s Galaxy S3 won the honor in August, according to Canaccord Genuity analyst T. Michael Walkley.

“We believe this is the first month since the iPhone 4S launched in October 2011 that it was not the top-selling smartphone in the U.S. market,” Walkley said, as reported by CNET.

Most likely, the shift is due to consumers waiting on the iPhone 5, which is expected to be announced next Wednesday.

But that shouldn’t take away from Samsung’s stunning achievement in the S3, with its slim form factor, beautiful display, 4G LTE speed and “fantastic” 8-MP camera, says InformationWeek.  Samsung had sold 10 million of the devices before the close of July after only a few weeks of sales in the U.S. plus sales in Europe and Asia since May.

As for the next iPhone, it is expected to bear the first new  form factor in an Apple phone in over 2 years.  It should also offer 4G LTE speed, a larger display and faster processor, according to various reports. It is also expected to use a new, smaller dock connector.

Apple will sell 6 – 10 million of the new phone in its first 10 days on the market, predicts noted Piper Jaffray  analyst Gene Munster, said CNET.
