Pioneer began shipping the AppRadio 2 in March, but it officially announced the new radio’s arrival in stores on Friday, along with a list of the Android apps and phones the radio will support.
The AppRadio 2 ($499) is a control station, much like a speaker dock for a smartphone, only for the car. It can control both Android phones and the iPhone, while displaying song information and art and app interfaces on a 7-inch capacitive touch screen.
AppRadio 2 doesn’t work with every app or every Android phone. It works with select Android models from Motorola, Samsung, HTC and Sony Ericsson.
Where the original AppRadio controlled about 10 iPhone apps, the new AppRadio 2 also works with Android apps including Pandora, INRIX traffic, AUPEO! Personal Radio, DashCommand, and ExtraMile. You can see a full list at http://pioneerelectronics.com/PUSA/Car/AppRadio
For use with an Android phone, you need an Android App Connectivity Kit, which, unfortunately, is currently delayed. Pioneer said it will announce availability of the kit (model CD-AH200C) in the near future.
