Audiovox revealed details on is new OBDII car locator launching with Sprint, just prior to the opening of the Consumer Electronics Show Monday.

CES logoThe new Car Connection plugs into an auto to deliver stolen vehicle location, tracking, car maintenance reports, fuel saving tips and teen driving reports. It can also disable your teen’s cellphone when he enters the car.

While others offer OBDII devices, Audiovox claims the Car Connection has the widest array of capabilities.  And through its alliance with Sprint, the service fee is ultra competitive at $9.99 per month.  The device itself will ship in April at about $129.

Audiovox is also expanding into personal tracking with another Sprint device called Care Connection.  The personal emergency device keeps you in touch with a young child, teen or older parent.   The Care Connection attaches to a belt or pendant.  If you press a button, you are connected to a care giver.  So parents can stay in touch with a child taking the bus to school or with  an older parent who may find a cellphone too complicated.   The device is expected to sell in the $149 range while the service fee is expected to fall below market prices at $14.95 a year or lower.  It is aimed at larger retailers such as Walmart, Target and Best Buy with delivery expected at the end of May.

If you’ve been waiting for the Audiovox Android headrest tablet announced last year, it should appear on the market in Q3 under both the Audiovox and Advent brands.   The tablet/headrest relies on a WiFi connection so a hotspot is required. It uses a dual-core processor and has ports for HDMI, USB and SD connections plus Bluetooth capability.

“Andorid tablets make up 22% of all the tablets shipped and Android smartphones dominate the field with a 55% share,” said Audiovox Electronics president Tom Malone.

Audiovox is also branching out into locators for personal property such as smartphones, laptops and tablets.  It is offering Bluetooth locators that pair with your electronic device and give you an alarm if you are separated, say from the tablet you left in the taxi.  Pricing starts at $29.
