CEA May Take Over 12V Initiative

There’s hope for a unified car audio awareness campaign yet. We received news that a plan is to be voted on by the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA) to fold the 12 Volt Initiative into the CEA.

If approved, it would create a promotions committee under the Automotive Electronics Div. of the CEA, said a source.  The plan is awaiting ratification by the Automotive Electronics Division board, whose next meeting is in early June.

We asked the CEA for a confirmation, but a spokesman said the organization had no comment at this time.

12 Volt Initiative still activeA key member of the 12 Volt Initiative’s leadership team also hinted at an alignment with the CEA.  He said a few members of the group are in discussions with “a prominent trade organization” about a new direction for the 12 Volt Initiative that may be announced in June.

You may remember that the 12 Volt Group was tasked with creating an industry-wide consumer awareness campaign that involved many vendors. Instead of competing against each other, suppliers would pool their resources to promote car stereo in general.  Pictured here is a scene from the group’s first and only “viral video” that launched in 2009.

By falling under the CEA’s umbrella, the 12 volt group might attract more supporting vendors because it would be under the auspices of a not-for-profit organization, said one leading supplier.  He said his company could not fully support the 12 Volt Initiative in the past because it was a for-profit organization.

MERA, the Mobile Electronics Retailers Association said it was not in talks with the 12 Volt Initiative.

  1. This doesn’t really excite me given how CEA has handles their Car Tech Week promotion. I have not been able to get anyone from CEA to respond to my inquiries regarding this event. If they don’t care to get retailers involved, I don’t hold much hope for folding the 12 V Initiative into CEA.

  2. Waiting for someone else to educate your consumers is asinine!

If you don’t take the initiative to secure your position in the marketplace you won’t be in the marketplace any more.

Hope is not a viable business plan…

  3. Hello

I’ve been a electronics retailer, mostly car for 21 years, its pretty tuff these days, this is by far the best news i’ve heard in many years. If we look back to the years of DEI having tv commercials,Alpine with their Lamborgini, etc, customers were excited about the products we had to offer,we need to bring that back at some level,or this complete industry will disappear.
