Addictive Launches Krome Audio

Addictive Audio is launching a new Krome Audio brand of car “Pro Audio” products including super tweeters, loudspeakers and one of the first car amplifiers designed just for super tweeters.

The super tweeters (speakers dedicated to the mid to high range) are popular in Florida, Trinidad and Puerto Rico where enthusiasts like to blast music from the car, said suppliers. Some enthusiasts even mount the speakers (loudspeakers) outside of the car on the frame or under the hood. (Kind of the opposite of Hawaii’s Sensible Sound movement).

Krome’s series include two super tweeters and three loudspeakers plus an outdoor water proof loudspeaker, model OD68 rated at 150 watts RMS.
The KA65 loudspeaker is a 6.5 inch model at 80 watts, RMS. It’s joined by the 8-inch KA8 at 150 watts and 10-inch KA10 at 225 watts RMS. The super tweeters are the 25mm KA25T and 50mm KA50T.

The super tweeter amp is the K4000HC, rated at 1000 watts x 2 at 1 ohm at 12.5 volts. It can run many loudspeakers at once, said Addictive Audio, owner Bryan McCutchen.

Addictive Audio said it doesn’t publish prices on Krome Audio and prefers that consumers call the dealer for pricing. But it would allow that the amp will fall in the $500 to $600 range.

The trend of blasting music (not just bass) from the car “started in New York. People got a hold of DJ equipment and starting jamming it in the car. They sounded like crap so car audio companies started [working on] it,” said McCutchen. The trend worked its way down to Florida. “It got huge in Florida, Trinidad and Puerto Rico. They just want to be the loudest and even put the speakers outside….They used to get marine speakers, cut a hole in the fender or screw it in, or get a PA from the local Radio Shack,” he said.
