Apple took an 87 percent slice of the tablet PC market in Q3—the first quarter when the iPad was available for the full duration–said IDC.
Suppliers shipped 4.8 million tablets worldwide during the period. That’s a 45 percent increase over the period a year ago when 3.3 million devices shipped.
IDC only counted tablets that run software specifically designed for mobile devices, such as iOS or Android. So devices running Windows desktop software were excluded.
Apple sold 7.5 million iPads during the first six month of shipping the device. We’ll find out tonight how the iPad fared in Apple’s fiscal Q1 when the company releases its quarterly earnings.
