Sony was just about the only top consumer electronics company NOT showing a tablet at the Consumer Electronics Show last week, but Sony says it still has plans to deliver an iPad contender.

A Sony exec told Reuters that the company wants to be the number 2 player in tablets behind Apple and that it deliberately kept its tablet plans under wraps at CES. And Sony CEO Howard Stringer told Reuters that the company is considering making a 3D tablet.

“If I want to differentiate it from others, do I release it tomorrow, or do I wait till I differentiate it?” Stringer said.

Also Sony’s head of the computer division Kunimasa Suzuki said, “For sure iPad is the king of tablets. But what is the second, what is the third? Who is taking the second position? That is our focus, We would like to really take the number two position in a year.”

Sony did show at CES a quasi tablet product–a portable version of its Dash chumby device.
