Black Friday GPS Sales Fall 27%

GPS was one of the hardest hit categories in consumer electronics over Black Friday as unit sales dived 37 27 percent compared to the period in 2009. (NPD corrected its blog presenting the data).

The findings were announced in an NPD blog that said total sales of consumer electronics over the Black Friday weekend were a bit weak, down about 3.5 percent compared to 2009.

But not all is doom and gloom because some of the hottest and most promising products for 2011 are not yet showing up in NPD data. These include Microsoft’s Kinect and Playstation 3’s Move—the new motion sensors for gaming. Also smartphone and iPad/tablet and eReader data is not yet available through NPD.

Overall notebook sales fell 4 percent in dollars over Black Friday, and desktop computer sales were down 11 percent. Point and shoot camera sales were down 10 percent in dollar volume.

While TV units and dollars have been weak all year, they rallied a bit over Black Friday with a unit increase of 5 percent and flat dollar sales. Blu-ray player and detachable lens camera sales came in strong, up 50 percent and 33 percent, respectively in unit sales.

NPD VP industry analysis Steve Baker concludes, “It is good news for the industry that there does appear to be some momentum around a number of key tech categories, and that TVs appear primed to contribute positive results to the overall industry this holiday season. As the largest dollar value category during the holiday, it is imperative for TVs to be strong for the industry to post any type of upside surprise.”
