The first color E Ink eReader will be unveiled tomorrow by the Hanvon–the largest maker of eReaders in China.
The eReader will have a 9.7-inch color touch screen with WiFi and 3G and will ship to China in March at a starting price of about $440, said The New York Times. There’s no date yet for a U.S. launch, but E Ink is hoping that more suppliers will adopt its new color screens.
The announcement will come shortly before the Barnes & Noble NOOK goes on sale November 19 using a color LCD screen.
But Hanvon’s eReader will use the first E Ink version of a color screen, so it will have 2 key advantages: that it may be viewed in direct sunlight and that is uses very little battery power.
E Ink vice president, Sri Peruvemba told the NYT, “I’m convinced that a lot of times it takes one company to prove the market.”
The E Ink color screen is not without drawbacks. Its colors are muted, and not as vibrant as those on an LCD. And it can’t support full motion video, although it may handle some animations.
Hanvon says its market share for eReaders in China is nearly 80 percent.
