In only a week, the Kindle 3, Amazon’s new lighter and faster Kindle has sold out. The Amazon web site lists both 6-inch Kindles–the $139 Kindle Wi-Fi and $189 3G graphite Kindle as temporarily sold out. Orders placed now will ship around September 4, said Amazon.

The new Kindle is said to use a new E Ink Pearl screen which was announced on July 1 and it is easy to speculate that the screen itself is in short supply.

The Kindle 3 became available July 28 offering Wi-Fi, and a screen with 50 percent better contrast than any other eReader. Also the body of the device is 21 percent smaller, the weight is down by 17 percent to 8.5 ounces, making it thinner and lighter than a paperback book. And the page turns are now 20 percent faster and quieter. The step up $189, 3G version weighs slightly more at 8.7 ounces. Battery life in both devices is up to a month with the wireless switched off. Both units also now feature “experimental web browsing.”
