After opening up an eBookstore this week, Borders is giving away 5 free best-sellers for anyone who downloads a Borders eBookstore app.

Users get $40 worth of free books for anyone who downloads the eBookstore software through July 14. Free titles include Dean Koontz’s “Frankenstein: Prodigal Son,” “One Shot” by Lee Child, “The Alchemyst” by Michael Scott, Julia Child’s ” Julia’s Kitchen Wisdom” and “Master your Metabolism” by Jillian Michaels.

The bookseller is sweetening the deal with a free chapter from Danielle Steel’s upcoming (unpublished) novel “Legacy” that goes on sales September 28.

Borders eBookstore apps work with BlackBerry, Android, iPad and iPhone devices.

The company claims its eBookstore launch on Wednesday was a success. CEO Mike Edwards said, “We’re exceptionally pleased with the number of downloads of our Borders applications and early response to our eBook offerings.”

The eBookstore offers 1.5 million books and is powered by the Kobo eReading service. Borders also sells several eReader brands including a $149 Kobo eReader and the $119 Libre eBook Reader Pro. It announced earlier this year it plans to carry a $399 dual screen Alex eReader.
