Amazon is preparing to release a new Kindle this summer and is reducing inventory on its current Kindle eReaders in preparation, reports Taiwan-based Digitimes Research.
“The new Amazon e-book reader will still use E-Ink solutions, but picture quality will be better than the present Kindles. Production cost and street prices will also be lower,” said Digitimes.
Sony is also expected to launch a new eReader in July, while Barnes & Noble will add 1 or 2 Nook models this year, it said.
Digitimes analysts found shipments of eReaders from OEM suppliers to U.S. vendors numbered 740,000 units in April and May, with Barnes & Noble’s nook accounting for 37 percent of shipments and the Kindle trailing at 16 percent, as it prepares for the new Kindle.
