Audi is testing a 62-speaker sound system in a luxury crossover Q7 for those of you who find 7.1-channel surround on tinny side. We’re talking 52 mid-range speakers, 5 woofers and 5 tweeters. The idea is to create a system that sounds equally great no matter where you are located within the car. It’s called wave field synthesis and gizmag explains it. Audi built the system as a prototype for research to help improve its current systems but the car maker is not quite ready to offer a 62-speaker option yet. (Audi does provide a 14-speaker, 1,110-watt Bang & Olufsen option).
