As Best Buy escalates its role in selling cellular phones (of the 75 to 100 stores Best Buy will open this year, most will be Best Buy Mobile outlets) what are the implications for other home entertainment retailers? The cellphone is becoming a link in the chain of home theater products. A newly announced HTC Evo 4G phone has an HDMI link to send hi-def video from the phone on the TV. NPD’s director of industry analysis Ross Rubin, noted Samsung’s forthcoming cellphone—the Galaxy S–“could be used as a DLNA client, routing content to the television from other sources around the home.” How should home theater retailers handle the incursion of the cellphone into TV territory? Rubin’s blog has implications for all CE retailers.
