Wi-Fi continues to infiltrate not just smartphones, but feature cellphones, as hotspots proliferate in the home and office.
A quarter of all mobile phones shipping in 2012 will have WiFi says research firm In-Stat in its new report. In 2009 the rate of growth for WiFi in phones was more than 20 percent and it’s expected to surge higher in 2010 with the number of WiFi–capable handsets exceeding 180 million units.
Also the percentage of phones with embedded WiFi will nearly triple from 2009’s rate by 2013.
In-Stat also says voice over WiFi is gaining popularity.
