Alex Ships in April at $399

The Alex eReader, heading for sale at Borders bookstores this June, is also now available for pre-order online in a WiFi version at $399.
Spring Design said pre-orders began today at www.springdesign.com for the dual screen, Android based eReader, with shipping starting in mid-April. A 3G version version should follow mid-year at a possible price of $479, said the company.

Spring Design may also offer the Alex through consumer electronics retailers.

The signature feature of Alex is that it offers a 6-inch electronic paper display with a 3.5-inch Android-based color LCD below it for Internet access while reading eBooks. The touch screen has a virtual keyboard so users can jump to relevant web links, and can access email, YouTube videos, etc. Yes, the design is similar to the Barnes & Noble nook and Spring Design filed a lawsuit against the bookseller in November siting a violation of a trade secrets.
Alex connects to Google’s bookstore with over one million titles, and other bookstores that support Adobe DRM.
The Alex eReader weighs 11 ounces and measures 4.7-inches by 8.9 inches and less than a half inch deep. Users may add their own content or download content to a microSD card.
