IREX eReader at Best Buy

Remember the IREX wireless 3G eReader shown last September (before the Nook, iPad, and Blio turned the eReader space on its ear)? Well the IREX DR800SG is now available on BestBuy.com and will hit Best Buy shelves “in the coming months,” said iRex.
A spinoff of Royal Philips, IREX has been selling eReaders to the Europeans, but the DR800SG is its first U.S. product. The device was originally slated to hit Best Buy at the end of October, so it’s a bit off schedule.
It looks like the $399 DR800SG, with an 8.1-inch E Ink screen and free wireless over-the-air book downloads will be going to other retailers in the near term as well (see Car Toys story).
The DR800SG works with the Barnes & Noble e-bookstore with more than 750,000 titles, expected to increase to well over a million in 2010.
IREX North America CEO Kevin Hamilton acknowledged the wide array of eReaders heading for the market. “A flurry of eReaders and tablets were announced at CES in January, but the reality is that many of these devices are not widely availability. Shoppers can head to BestBuy.com and purchase the DR800SG immediately… not a few months away.”
The IREX has a touchscreen that works with a stylus, although last year it promised a full touch screen device in the future as well as a color device in 2011. It uses Verizon’s 3G service.
