Apple’s suppliers have already started to produce a new smaller tablet with a 7.85 inch screen, said the Wall Street Journal.

Apple logoTwo factories began mass production of the LCD screen for the new Apple tablet last month.

The smaller screen size may appeal to consumers who use a tablet mainly to watch TV or play games and want a more portable version they can hold in one hand. Apple’s current iPad has a 9.7 inch screen.

Also this week, Fortune reported that Apple will send out press invitations for an unveiling of a new tablet on October 10, according to an unnamed source.  That would suggest a tablet unveiling on October 17 followed  by a launch on November 2, if Apple follows its usual pattern, Fortune said.

The market for tablets is expected to heat up for the holidays. Google launched the Nexus 7, 7-inch tablet for $199 recently and Amazon released last month new versions of the Kindle Fire starting at $159. Microsoft will soon launch a larger “Surface”  tablet with a 10.6 inch screen.
