A car audio retailer out of Lincoln, NE has moved into the business of selling a 4-sensor blind spot detection system called DrivSafe.
Owner Robert Peinado began importing the system after receiving repeated requests for aftermarket blind spot detectors from local car dealers. BMW buyers would see the feature in a 7-series and complain that it wasn’t available on a 3- or 5-series vehicle, he said.
After tweaking the system with a factory in China, he began selling DrivSafe through a distributor and direct to retailers in February, and is now talking to other distributors about stocking DrivSafe, which has a suggested retail price of $349.
The product uses ultrasonic sensors that mount on the each side of the rear bumper, each at about a 45 degree angle and on each side of the front bumpers. Two LEDs indicate when an object in the blind spot. Because of the 4 sensors, the system doesn’t false alert for guard rails or curbs (or when an object is first detected by the front sensors).
The sensors have about a 10 foot range (or unofficially 15 feet).
Peinado, who turned 30 this month, has owned his store since 2006. He said he is now building a 6,000 square foot building for warehousing and research.
For the future, Peniado is looking at offering aftermarket automatic cruise control with automatic braking. He may be reached at [email protected]
