Pioneer has launched the SPH-OD880, its first multimedia unit designed to sit on top of the dashboard rather than replace the factory radio.
The unit uses an 8.8 inch capacitive touchscreen with 1280 x 480 resolution. It supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, both wired and wireless, through built in Wi-Fi. Bluetooth handles hands free calling and audio streaming. The unit also supports WebLink, a 10 band graphic equalizer, customizable backgrounds and Full HD video playback through USB.
The SPH-OD880 targets vehicles where swapping the factory head unit is difficult or not possible. Pioneer said the unit installs as a plug and play upgrade. It draws power from the vehicle’s 12V accessory socket and sends audio to the factory stereo through an Aux input or a built in FM transmitter. Hard wired installation is also an option. A GPS antenna and external Bluetooth microphone come in the box.
A rear camera input accepts both CVBS and AHD 720p cameras.
The unit measures 22.6 cm wide, 12.5 cm high and 6.5 cm deep. Pioneer said it meets the company’s automotive grade standards, with an operating range of minus 10 to 60 degrees Celsius.
The SPH-OD880 is available in the United Kingdom for £299. There has been no update on the SPH-OD880 coming to the North American market. Perhaps SEMA will bring news.
