General Motors CEO Mary Barra said the car maker will eventually phase out CarPlay and Android Auto in ALL vehicles, (not just electric vehicles as previously announced).
Instead, GM is switching to use of the Google Gemini assistant on an Android powered platform. Gemini can be used to command car features, including asking to remote start the car.
Barra did not indicate the timing of the CarPlay/Android Auto phase-out. Her revelation was made during an interview on the podcast Decoder with The Verge’s Nilay Patel.
Barra noted that GM has 40 car models in its portfolio, so it started the CarPlay/Android Auto phase-out with EVs. Patel asked her, “So we should expect new gas cars will not have smartphone projection?” Barra said, “As we get to a major rollout, I think that’s the right expectation. Yes.”
Barra’s comments Wednesday, were on the same day that GM announced details on a new “centralized computing platform,” a hardware are software platform that will first debut in the 2028 Cadillac Escalade IQ, and then roll out to other Cadillacs, said Car and Driver.
