World EV sales up for 2026

Europe sold nearly 600,000 electric vehicles in September, a monthly record and a 39% jump from a year earlier, according to Benchmark Mineral Intelligence.

Global EV sales reached 2.15 million. That is down 2% from September 2025 but up 17% from August.

North America fell 44% to about 130,000 vehicles. China dropped 18% to 1.11 million. The rest of the world rose 81% to around 310,000.

For the year so far, Europe is up 30% at 3.9 million vehicles. North America is down 24% at 1.2 million.

The North American number needs context. September 2025 was the last month before the $7,500 U.S. federal EV tax credit expired, and buyers rushed to purchase. That makes the comparison harsh.

Benchmark said the year over year comparison “should improve markedly” from the fourth quarter. Smaller declines will not necessarily mean demand has recovered, the firm said.
