The upcoming iPhone 17, announced today by Apple, will offer those who use their iPhone cameras for social media and promotions some improved features.
Many in the industry have come to rely on their iPhones for photographing installations, interviewing customers or taking beauty shots of products they want to feature. Here are some improvements in the newest iPhones you can expect.
The iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max models both feature drastically improved photo, battery and processing improvements. The A19PRO processor touts a new 6-core CPU and 6-core graphics processing unit (GPU), which is roughly four times faster than its predecessor, according to Apple’s SVP of Worldwide Marketing, Greg Joswiak.
Pricing on the iPhone 17 Pro starts at $1099.
Apple also introduced the new iPhone Air, the thinnest iPhone to date at 5.6mm thickness. It is based on the Pro model. It’s also “more durable than any previous iPhone.” Pricing starts at $999.
Joswiak said of the iPhone 17, it’s “a dramatic leap in performance, making this the most powerful iPhone ever, by far.” He went on to break down the thermal management system in detail, which utilizes a vapor chamber to pull heat from the CPU and transfers it to the aluminum unibody of the phone. The improved heat management turns into higher performance for tasks like in-phone video editing. All of the iPhone 17 models were reported to have the best battery life in Apple’s history.
“We updated the imaging pipeline,” Said Patrick Carroll, Apple’s Manager of iPhone Camera Architecture, of the new Pro and Pro Max iPhones. “[They] feature the best camera system we’ve ever made. That means you’ll get more detailed images at every zoom range and light level.” Carroll reported an 18-megapixel front-facing camera, and on the back a trio of 48-megapixel lenses, with fusion, telephoto and ultra-wide lens options.
Both the video and still photo modes offer an improved stabilization system, allowing the subject to be in focus and centered in the image during motion (such as walking around a car or running while filming). “It’s perfect for nature photography, freezing motion, and capturing stunning detail,” says Carroll. He also reported that Apple uses machine learning in the processing of photos to reduce noise and maintain color accuracy and improve detail in low light. The digital zoom is up to 40x magnification for photos.
