Smart Start, maker of alcohol ignition interlock devices (IIDs) has partnered with the Mobile Electronics Specialists of America (MESA) buying/marketing group.

Participating MESA dealers nationwide will offer Smart Start interlocks.

This marks MESA’s first partnership with an IID maker. MESA Executive Director Ryan Gunter said the group decided to enter this segment as some members found they were able to convert some IID customers into car audio customers. Dealers were also able to generate extra income through the category, and keep installers busy during slow periods.

“You spend time with these individuals [IID customers].  In a lot of cases, you see them every 60 days. You can explain what you do as a company and that has resulted in long term customers for a lot of our dealers.  And the business itself has the potential to generate good revenue dollars,” said Gunter.

Smart Start works directly with municipalities to enroll people who are mandated to use an IID by the court system. They also advertise.  Then customers are directed to their dealers.  MESA members are listed as preferred dealers in each region.

Retailers then bill the customers directly for servicing and installing/removing the IIDs and they are able to set their own labor rates.

Smart Start’s Ignition Interlocks include the new FLEX device as well as the SmartMobile Classic and SmartMobile Insight.  The Smart Start SmartWeb platform offers real-time reporting and analysis for easy caseload management.

“We are excited to partner with M.E.S.A. to make our Ignition Interlock Devices more accessible to drivers across the country,” said Bob Gallup, Chief Revenue Officer of Smart Start.

“Our partnership with Smart Start Ignition Interlock Devices is the best way for our members to get into this space or expand their reach in their market…” said Gunter.
