BZRK Audio announced it has developed the first glass-domed car tweeter.
Glass is rigid, lightweight and inexpensive, so it can be a more practical alternative to exotic materials such as titanium, said BZRK Audio Founder Paris Featherstone.
He said the tweeter is durable and “suited to the usual wear and tear typical with car speakers…It is very tough. I’ve thought about not even having a grille on there.”
The glass tweeter is now in an Indiegogo campaign (although the campaign did not yet have any investors at the time of this writing). Featherstone will develop the speaker next year regardless of the results of the campaign, he told CEoutlook.
The Indiegogo campaign set a goal of raising $20,000 for 500 – 1000 tweeter speaker pairs to be ready by January, 2024. The speakers are expected to sell for $75/pair or higher, but Indiegogo contributors who pledge $45 can receive a complimentary pair.
Glass, though rare, has been offered in the home audio space. Sony has a Bluetooth speaker with a glass cylinder.
“Glass is very hard and very light, which are two good properties for a speaker. Hard and light and inexpensive are difficult to find,” Featherstone said. The resulting sound is highly accurate with a wide frequency range that can go beyond 20,000 Hz, he said.
BZRK Audio is a small audio company that has sold tweeters and 6.5 inch coaxials and components online since 2017. Its headquarters is in Phoenix, Arizona. Prior to launching BZRK, Featherstone bought and sold goods at auction.
Featherstone may expand his use of glass into 4 inch mid bass drivers. “Glass gives you a wider frequency response for a smaller driver. I think it will really shine in mid-sized speakers. The sound is very detailed and very accurate. If you are familiar with studio monitors…this is the first tweeter we’ve sold worthy of being in a studio monitor.”
