Directed, a VOXX brand, is now planning to release 4G dashcams with live view capability by the end of the year. Directed has revamped the 4G dashcam prototype it originally previewed at CES just before the pandemic. It hopes to unveil this new Directed SmartView and ViperView at the SEMA show this year.
Unlike the original model, the new dashcams will include additional advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS). But as before, they will incorporate a 4G SmartStart and two cameras. When attached to a Directed Ds4 module they will notify users of any tampering with the car and allow a live view on your smartphone of the area in and around the car. The new version will also allow more margin for the dealers, said VOXX’s Aron Demers.
“It gives another layer of protection and notification to the consumer when their vehicle may be tampered with, and it also gives our dealers an opportunity, when presenting a SmartStart sale, to step the consumer up to a higher price point, retaining all the SmartStart features but picking up the DVR and ADAS,” said Demers.
The SmartView includes a front facing camera and rear facing 180 degree camera that can display the inside and outside of the car so you could see someone smashing a window.
Users can access recorded video to view an event, as well as access live footage. As a standalone device, when not connected to the DS4, users still have access to video footage and a live view, but they don’t receive event notifications.
With the DS4 users also get remote start and remote lock and unlock so the SmartView becomes an upsell to a remote start sale.
Directed is targeting a price of between $399 and $499.
By the way, Amazon’s Ring Car Cam just received a thumbs down review on WIRED.
