Sundown Monster 18-in Subwoofer for Car
Sundown Audio announced two limited run subwoofers designed for demo builds.
The first is a “monster” subwoofer that weighs close to 200 pounds. It measures 18 inches and uses Sundown’s current frame, first offered in 2014, taking it to its maximum capacity, said Bryan Chamberlain.
The plans call for a conservative power rating of about 7,500 watts RMS. “The idea is a limited run woofer that can maximize what can be done with the frame,” he said.  “It will use a 5-inch voice coil; it won’t be efficient. It allows you to use a ton of power for a longer period of time with less risk of something going wrong.”  As yet unnamed, the subwoofer is due in 2023 at a price of around $2,000.

Also from Sundown, is a limited run subwoofer series that went on pre-order this month.  The new SDDM series was inspired by car audio competitor Steven Dunkin, and originally designed for one of his builds.

SDDM subwoofers will be available in 10 to 18 inches with dual 3.3-inch voice coils for more power handling suitable to all-day-long demonstrations.  The 1 ohm subwoofers handle 3,000 watts RMS power in a conservative rating and are due in mid-to-late spring 2023 at a tentative price range of $1,200 to $1,500.
“When you start to get into very large coils you start to lose efficiency. Most of our big boy woofers have voice coils of only 3 inches, but some, with too much power, will blow those.  These have more power capability and more longevity without compromising too much efficiency,” said Chamberlain.
Sundown Audio is in the process of being acquired by a sister company to XS Power.  The purchaser, Systematic Audio, is owned by Scottie Johnson, who also owns XS Power.
