AudioFrog Intros Its First Amplifiers

Boutique car audio speaker company, Audiofrog, will enter the high-fidelity amplifier market this March with two mini Class D models designed for sound quality.

The company first showed a prototype of the amplifiers two years ago.  But with the parts shortages during COVID and the expense of entering a new sector,  Audiofrog faced a number of challenges. In characteristic style, Audiofrog Founder Andy Wehmeyer, explained, “We finally made enough money to bring these things to market. They’re great.”

The amplifiers are similar to a half brick in size and weight.  They include a hefty heat sink. They were designed for low distortion and low noise by Wehmeyer’s, “brilliant” friend Mr. Tan, with whom Wehmeyer has collaborated many times over the years.

“There are lots of ways to make great products.” Wehmeyer continued. “One way is literally to know everything about everything yourself.  I know a lot about how to make a car sound great. I have a lot of experience in that one thing. I’m not an electrical engineer. This exercise for us is really about me explaining to an amp design expert what we need to make a car sound great and providing some circuit level designs and lots of specific requirements for features and for performance. Then the expert does his thing.”

Both amplifiers have differential inputs for low noise. The PC board and heat sink work together to form an EMI shield to guard against FM radio distortion.

The 4-channel A150.4D is rated at 100 watts by 4 at 4 ohms and 150 watts by 4 at 2 ohms.  The mono A600.1D is rated at 600 watts by 1 at 2 ohms and 450 watts at 4 ohms.

They are expected to ship the first half of March at $799 each.
