The first beta version of the new iOS 13.4 for developers shows references to a “CarKey” API, which will work in cars with Near Field Communication (NFC). Users hold the phone or watch near a car that has embedded NFC. The feature would work even if the battery of the phone or watch was dead.
To pair the device, users open Apple’s Wallet app and then use the car maker’s app to set up the CarKey function, said 9to5 Mac.
The function lets you grant access to you car to other people by sending them a message through the Wallet app.
9to5Mac said Apple is already working with some car makers to enact CarKey. But it is not expected to become a feature until iOS 13.4 is released to the general market.
