Apple Monday provided a first glimpse of iOS 13 due this fall, giving CarPlay and Apple Maps a new look and new features.
In a keynote speech at the Apple Worldwide Developers Conference, the company showed a new CarPlay format that leaves room on the side to dsiplay more info such as music or maps. CarPlay will soon offer “smart suggestions” like suggesting you close the garage door via a garage door opener or notifying you of your next calendar appointment. Album art appears front and center. Apple called the update the “biggest” since CarPlay was first introduced.
CarPlay is now available on more than 90 percent of the cars sold in the US and it surpasses Android Auto in adoption by the car makers, Apple hinted.
Also of note to 12 volters, Apple’s Siri voice assistant now works with Pandora and Waze.
Apple has also greatly improved its Maps application. It’s been collecting data across the US to add a vast amount of detail to Maps. Roads, beaches, parks and buildings will show more detail. There’s a binoculars button that essentially shows Street View-like scenes wherever you tap on the Apple map. You get a high definition, 3D view of the scene with the ability to zoom down a city block. Users can also tap on labels that appear on the screen for more information on places shown.
There’s a new junction view and a one-tap ability to share your ETA with friends or family.
iOS 13 overall allows apps to launch up to twice as fast as in iOS 12. Face ID will also unlock 30 percent faster.
It allows a new “dark mode” for a black background across all apps. There’s also a new music feature that shows lyrics synced to the music. Another new feature that lets you send spam calls directly into voicemail.
Additionally, users with disabilities can also now control iOS completely through voice.
iOS 13 is available to developers today.
