The CEO of ProBox was a car audio competitor in the 80’s. He’s been running a growing powersports audio company and is now bringing that product to car audio dealers.
ProBox was first a car audio company known for its high output car audio subwoofer enclosures in the 90s. Then around 2006, ProBox CEO Gerald Kirkland found his inbox was filling up with email from UTV owners seeking enclosures for their powersports vehicle.
So ProBox began focusing mainly on powersports audio, selling prefab UTV rooftops filled with audio and LEDs and tree sliders (skids that take the impact when you brush by trees) to Kawasaki, Polaris and CanAm UTV dealers. It does about $12 million annually in powersports alone.
Now the brand is returning to car audio dealers with line of waterproof powersports amplifier kits (complete with amp, wiring and Bluetooth for audio streaming) and tower speakers. In limited markets, ProBox will also sell audio roof tops to 12 volt dealers.
ProBox amplifiers build the wiring kit into the amplifier with 8-10 foot cables sealed to the ends of the amplifier. When mounting, you cut the ties and roll out the wire. It decreases the risk of water entering the amplifier.
The company will display at KnowledgeFest August 11-14 in Dallas.
Kirkland was an offroader himself in Texas, and so the switch to powersports audio was natural. “We saw the trend changing from the average guy spending $2-$3,000 on car audio to spending it for his side by side. Around that time we realized that car audio was not going to work in this type of environment and that’s when we developed our line for offroading and mud issues.”
He said at offroading Mudfest events, “it’s nothing for 20,000 people to show up at one of these things. People party and have a good time. We’re out there.”
At KnowledgeFest dealers will see “a bundle of new stuff” including “amplifiers you can put in a side by side and jump in a mud hole and it’s still good to go,” said Kirkland.
To access the gain and crossovers, ProBox amplifiers include a gasket with a trap door that must be removed to accomplish settings on the amp. Installers then replace the gasket and cover and torque it down so it’s sealed. Amplifier ratings are at 300 watts RMS x 2, 1000 watts x 2, 1500 watts x 2 and 1100 watts x 5 (at 2 ohms). The kits include a Bluetooth/aux controller and a Bluetooth RGB control module. They range in price from $399 to $799.
ProBox claims its tower speakers have an excellent bass response. They use passive radiators on the back side of the cans. They range in price from $399 to $1,195.
The company offers protected distribution and does not sell through distributors.
