The 2017 Cadillac CTS is not only the first car that can talk to other cars using vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communication, but it is also one of the first to communicate with traffic lights using to vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) technology.

Cadillac development cars received real time data from traffic lights during a recent trial demonstration held in conjunction with  Michigan road agencies.

Drivers were alerted of a potential red light violation while traveling at their current speed to help them decide whether to brake abruptly or accelerate through a busy intersection, said General Motors.

The cars receive a signal once every second from the traffic signals (which broadcast info every 1/10th of a second).  The system uses DSRC (dedicated short range communication over WiFi) the same system currently used for V2V communications in the Cadillac CTS.

V2I might also warn drivers of traffic congestion or bad weather in the future.

Through a collaboration with GM and Michgan’s DOT, a 3 mile section of I-75 will use V2I technology under a project expected to take 4 months to complete, said Automotive News.

As for other states that may want to roll out V2I, it costs about $10,000 per intersection to install.

Audi also demonstrated V2I during CES in Las Vegas.
