We reported that the tax refund season was slow to materialize for some car stereo specialists this year, and that retail sales in general fell unexpectedly in March.

The verdict is now rendered on on car audio retail sales as measured by the NPD Group, which found traditional car audio to be flat for the first quarter of this year.

Car stereo speaker salesĀ  rose 1 percent over the same period last year and sales of in-dash AV video receivers rose 12 percent (dollars).

Amplifier sales to consumers fell 4 percent for the period compared to last year and in-dash receivers fell 8 percent, with the overall effect being flat sales for traditional car audio, said NPD.
