GM Ditching CarPlay Impact on Aftermarket

General Motors said its customers used its app that allows remote starting a car from a phone 133 million times last year, which was more than double that of 2014, reported The Wall Street Journal.

General Motors’ RemoteLink app was first launched in 2010. It provides users 5 years of free smartphone control over remote start as well as locking and unlocking car doors and checking fuel level and tire pressure status.

It was used over 100 million times in 2015 in North America alone plus 33 million times in China and 83,000 times in Europe in 2015.

The car maker expects usage to go up to about 260 million globally this year.

GM said it is not accustomed to seeing ‘numbers like this’ and called it ‘explosive.’
