After testing 22 car models, Yahoo Autos concluded its Tech Ride of the Year for 2015 with the best infotainment technology are any that use Apple CarPlay or Android Auto.
The cars were singled out for their ability to deliver a lot of features in a simple interface.
The car with the most infotainment-type technology was cited as the Mercedes-Benz GLE350, with a track pad and a rotary knob that pushes in many directions, 360-degree camera and more. But the technology is overwhelming and therefore distracting, “enough to make your eyes bleed,” said Yahoo’s David Pogue. Also the Audi TT was cited for lot’s of tech including little screens on the knobs and a cool dash screen but it serves up too much information to read while on the road.
A second award was given to the car with the best driving technology such as autonomous parking, and lane keeping. The winner in this category was the Volvo XC90. Yahoo called it, “Hands down..Best ride, most unobtrusive technology, most refined self-driving and safety features.”
But the Tech Car of the Year still went to those with CarPlay and Android Auto. “These systems are extremely simple, feature huge fat touchscreen buttons, and limit interaction to quick adjustments. They use voice interaction as much as possible, to help you keep your eyes on the road,” said Yahoo’s David Pogue.
Among cars tested with CarPlay were General Motors models, the Chevy Malibu and Camaro, and Cadillac ATS-V and CTS-V .
