Ford announced the first vehicles to get the new SYNC 3 systems will be the 2016 Escape and Fiesta as of this summer.

The new SYNC radio system offers over-the-air updates via WiFi, faster touch screens and smartphone-like pinch-to-zoom touch screens.

Additionally, Ford is developing Carplay and Android Auto for the SYNC 3 platform but has not yet announced when SYNC 3 will officially be compatible with the new Apple and Google smartphone systems.

The home screen for SYNC is now simpler with three zones—navigation, audio and phone. Users can also now search through phone contacts with a swipe and search through destinations and points of interest as they would in a search engine.

Ford says the new SYNC requires fewer steps to carry out voice commands. It also offers Siri Eyes-Free, which may be launched from the steering wheel.

SYNC can connect to apps including Spotify, Pandora, Glympse, NPR One and iHeart Auto.

SYNC is now in more than 12 million vehicles on the road globally.
