Metra is shipping a WiFi interface that allows one-way mirroring of audio and video from a smartphone or tablet to the car radio screen.
Called the AX-MLINK, it comes with a WiFi antenna. It works with any aftermarket head unit with AV inputs as well as smartphones and tablets running iOS or Android.
It can be used to stream music and project video or anything that you run on your smartphone or tablet onto the car radio screen. Turn by turn directions from the phone may also be heard through the car’s audio system from GPS apps. But apps will still need to be controlled from the smartphone or tablet.
It’s aimed especially for non-navigation radios that have an AV input.
The AX-MLINK will have the capability to work with Sync 3 vehicles later this year on select 2016 vehicles, said Metra.
The AX-MLINK will accommodate Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, said Metra.
