Larger cars tend to use more electronics than smaller cars. Their owners are more likely to want rear screen entertainment for the kids, and at least until 2018, more likely to need a backup camera.
So it may be good news for the aftermarket that SUVs and crossovers, for the first time, recently outsold sedans in the US.
An analysis by IHS Automotive found that utility vehicles had a 36.5 percent market share for the first 5 months this year compared to 35.4 percent for sedans.
Last year that figure would have flipped 36.6 to 33.9 percent sedans v. SUV/crossovers.
The market share for trucks, which includes all utility vehicles, vans and pickups now has a 53.2 percent share of new US vehicle sales.
