In the future, OEM car security might make use of cameras, not just traditional locks and sensors, to deter theft.
A camera might be able to tell you who is sitting in the driver seat and send you a text if he’s an unauthorized person.
Ford and Intel are already examining this type of system in a joint research project called Project Mobii. It explores how to combine front facing cameras in cars with sensors to create new features for drivers.
By adding facial recognition software, different drivers can be identified. If the driver is authorized then the car might adjust the controls for him. If he’s your teenage son, it might revert to restricted settings.
Ford is looking at giving a driver all his personal music, calendar and contact settings when he enters the car.
The Ford and Intel team even includes anthropologists. Maybe the anthropologists can create what engineers have failed to achieve so far: a simple but advanced factory infotainment system.
